Is this a juried or screened show? Do I need to submit slides of my work? No, this is not a juried or screened show and you do not have to submit photos of your work. It's open to all fine artists, and the quality of the artwork exhibited and sold at our show has always been high. I create crafts as well as fine art. Can I sell both at the show? The show is limited to fine art only (oils, watercolors, acrylics, gouache, drawing, pastels, charcoals, sculpture, & photography); no crafts. However, items derived from your fine art may be sold (ie, notecards, prints, etc), as long as the majority of work displayed for sale is your original fine art. Is this show indoors or outdoors? The show is held outside, in the Italian Gardens of the Vanderbilt Mansion, in Hyde Park, NY. There are two large grassy areas on the upper levels of the garden that are used for the show. Do I need my own display unit? We provide a snow fence on which the art can be hung, but you may use your own freestanding display unit/tent if you have one. Some artists hang some art work on the snow fence, and then place a small 4-sided display unit in front of it, to hang more pictures. You may also use a table or print bins, or place pictures on the ground or a blanket. What is a snow fence? It's a slatted fence about 4 feet high that we put up specifically for the art show. Artists are alloted a space 15 feet long, and a depth of approximately 8-10 feet. How many exhibitors are there in the art show? There are usually between 50-60 exhibitors in the show. How long has this show been in existence, and how good is the attendance? The first F.W. Vanderbilt Association Art Show & Sale took place in 1992, and has been held every year since. We've had excellent attendance at our art show every year, and excellent sales. This is a very popular event, and there are customers who return year after year. In addition, there are bus tours that come to the Vanderbilt Mansion during the day, and the people on these tours come to the art show. The art show & sale has always been our biggest fund-raiser. What if it rains the day of the show? Since the show is held on the Saturday of a three-day holiday weekend (Columbus Day Weekend), the first rain date is the next day, Sunday. If it rains on that day also, then Monday will be the next rain date. Artists will be contacted either the night before, or the morning of the show, if there is to be a rain postponement. We'll also provide phone numbers that the artists can call. Will there be help available to load and unload my car? Yes, our Vanderbilt Garden Volunteers will be on hand in the morning to help you unload and set up. They will also be available in the late afternoon, to help load up your car again. Volunteers are at the show all day, so you can also ask a volunteer to stay with your display a few minutes if you need to get refreshments or use the facilities. Will there be food available? Yes, we offer the following refreshments for sale: hotdogs, chili, soda, lemonade, ice tea, and "finger foods" (cake, cookies, etc). We provide coffee and donuts in the morning for the artists. Are other food vendors allowed? Other food vendors are not allowed at the Art Show. This is a fund-raiser for the Vanderbilt Garden Association, so all proceeds from the sale of food go to the association. Are restrooms available? We have Port-A-Johns available for the exhibitors and those attending the show. Is there an entrance fee for the general public? Admittance to the Art Show is free for the general public. The Vanderbilt Mansion will be open for tours the entire Columbus Day weekend. The National Park Service does charge a fee for the mansion tour. Is this Art Show limited to Hudson Valley artists? The show is open to all fine artists. A majority of the artists do live locally in the Hudson Valley, but we also have had artists from upstate NY, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Is there much to see in the gardens in October? The peak season for bloom in the Italian gardens is May through September. However, there is still much to see in the garden in October, and Columbus Weekend is usually peak time here for the beautiful fall foliage. From the Vanderbilt estate there are wonderful views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. Why is the show held in the fall, rather than during peak bloom in the gardens? First, it's cooler in the fall. Second, our volunteers are usually working at maintaining the gardens during the summer. Third, the 3-day holiday weekend allows us to offer two rain dates, if the show is rained out on Saturday. Finally, Columbus Day weekend is normally the biggest tourist weekend in the mid-Hudson Valley of the year, with many activities taking place throughout the area.
