The Vanderbilt Gardens
in August

FWVGA logo
By August, the annuals have reached their full growth, filling out the shapes of the beds. The effect is one of the most striking things about a formal garden. The variety of dark red canna in the center, round bed are named "Red King Humbert".

The ornamental grass surrounding the outside of the bed is a small variety of pennisetum grass. Unlike the other plants on this level, this is a perennial and is often called "fountain grass" because it looks like water spraying out of a fountain. This is a very hardy grass which comes in a variety of sizes. We usually wait until spring to cut back the dead leaves as it is too tough to cut when green. Besides, it forms really interesting shapes in the snow during the winter.
