Summer - AugustThe "dog days" of August, the heart of summertime. August 2005 has turned out to be the typical "triple H" month: hazy, hot and humid. Just the type of weather that plants like annuals love. It has also been dry, with lower than average rainfall. Luckily, irrigation is one of the modern conveniences that the FWVGA has added to the garden. So, no matter how hot and dry it gets, the plants receive as much water as they need.
August is the month when both gardeners and the garden take it easy
and slow. Its too hot to work too hard. Most of the annuals will
reach their peak in August, while many perennials and roses will
enjoy a second blooming. Meanwhile, the volunteers will do light,
cleanup work to keep the garden looking nice despite the heat. We also
get a chance to sit back and enjoy the garden before the work of
autumn starts.
