When the F. W. Vanderbilt Garden Association began in
1984, it consisted of a handful of intrepid gardeners whose dream
was to breathe life back into the long neglected garden. The mission?
To restore the Vanderbilt garden as closely as possible to the
1930's era.
Years and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours later,
the garden thrives and the mission remains the same.
Now, the FWVGA
has well over 100 members from all over the Hudson
Valley. It is a completely self-supporting, not-for-profit
organization.
Along with doing the garden work, volunteers also work to
raise money to support the garden. They make and sell crafts,
hold bake sales, flea markets and other
special events in order to raise the needed funds.
While the FWVGA works under the
supervision of the National Park Service, it receives NO federal
or state funding. All the money needed to purchase plants, tools,
equipment and other garden supplies are raised through donations,
grants, and special fundraising activities.
Volunteering with the FWVGA is a great way to meet interesting
people, learn more about gardening and contribute to the community.
Volunteers can choose whatever activity suits them best. The only
requirement for membership is to work 15 hours per year. These hours
can be accumulated through garden work, or by participating in fund
raising or administrative activities.
