The Vanderbilt Gardens
in July

FWVGA logo
The smaller, "sock" shaped beds are filled with coleus in 2005. This is the first time we have tried coleus in the garden. Like begonias, most gardeners associate coleus with shady spots. However, in the last few years, many new varieties of coleus have been developed that can tolerate full sun with no problem. Unlike other annuals, coleus are not normally desired for their flowers, which are small and not very showy. Instead, coleus are prized for the color of their foliage. They can be found in everything from florescent green to deep wine to bright pinks and purples.

The variety in this picture is named "Pistachio Nightmare".
