Summer - JulyBy July, the perennials and roses have both provided a spectacular show. However, as the summer moves into full swing, it is time for the annuals to take the stage. "Annuals" refers to plants that last for a single season, so they have to be planted every year. In the Hudson Valley, they normally are planted in late May to avoid a frost that could kill them, as these plants cannot tolerate the cold. Because they live for such a short time, most annuals grow quickly and bloom all summer. They epitomize the saying "Eat, Drink and Be Merry, for tomorrow we die".
