The Rose Garden

In the Hudson Valley, mid-June is time for roses. The Vanderbilt garden contains over 1700 rose plants in 15 varieties. Over the last few years, the Garden Association has tried to obtain older, vintage rose varieties that are closer to what was in the original garden. These plants have added both beauty and lovely scents to the garden.

The rose level of the garden was the only part actually added by Frederick Vanderbilt when he purchased the estate in 1895. The annual and perennial levels as well as the walls and buildings were built by Walter Langdon, whose family owned the estate from 1840 to 1894.

Here is a sampling of the roses featured in the garden during the 2005 season.
