The Vanderbilt Gardens
in September

The variety of begonia known as "dragon wing" was introduced only a few years ago. Unlike other types of begonias, these feature large, broad leaves. These begonias can tolerate full sun, but need a lot of water to keep from being "sun burnt" during the height of the summer. Two of the most common colors are dark red (pictured) and salmon pink.

One of the nicest features of these begonias is their large, bushy appearance. They start out rather small and fragile. However, by the end of the summer, each plant has grown into a large bush, covered in flowers. These flowers will bloom continuously until a "killing frost". In warmer climates, they may continue even longer. These plants can be grown in pots, but their size makes it hard to put them with anything else. Also, the flowers will drop off regularly, requiring a lot of sweeping.
