The Vanderbilt Gardens
in September

Thanks to the heat of August, the canna have achieved their full height of over 6 ft. Their stature and foliage, as well as their large flowers, help them stand out from all other annuals. In the south, where the soil never freezes, these can be perennials. Their rizomes cannot tolerate freezing. So, in New York, you have to pull them up at the end of the season and store them some place dark and cool, but not freezing.

Beware! What went in the ground as a small rizome, the size of your hand, will come out of the ground 5 times larger and weighing 10-20 lbs.
