Late Summer/Fall - SeptemberIn the Hudson Valley, September ushers in the first signs of autumn. The humidity gives way to crystal blue skys and cool nights. As the heat lessens and the days get shorter, the plants of the garden begin to change as well. The summer, heat loving plants start to lose their blossoms and fade. Meanwhile, the cool loving plants that bloomed in late spring, get a second chance before winter sets in. September 2005 has been unusually warm, with days in the low 90's F until nearly the end of the month. It has also been very, very dry, which has been affecting the trees and will probably mute their colors later in the season. The Vanderbilt gardens, thanks to irrigation, continue to thrive.
